The 440-year-old letter under the bridge

For the one scene where nothing supernatural happens, the production used Wolyeonggyo — a bridge built around a letter that was found in a grave.

In 1998, a housing development in Jeongha-dong, Andong, forced the relocation of a set of unmarked graves. One belonged to Yi Eung-tae of the Goseong Yi clan, who died in 1586 at thirty-one. Inside the coffin, laid on his chest, were a letter and a pair of mituri — woven hemp sandals. The letter was written by his wife, in Korean, and it is not a formal lament. It argues with him. You always said we would live together until our hair went white and die on the same day. She asks how he could go first. She tells him she is pregnant and asks what she is supposed to do. She asks him to come to her in a dream and explain himself.

The sandals were the part that stopped people. She had woven her own hair into the hemp while he was ill, the way you make something for a person you expect to walk again. He never wore them. The letter and the sandals are now in the Andong National University museum, and they are among the best-known objects in the city.

Wolyeonggyo was built as a monument to that marriage, and the deck is shaped after those sandals — 387 metres of them across the Nakdong River. It’s free to walk, and the lights come on at six.

Then episode 9 put Cheon Yeo-ri and Ma Kang-wook on it. A woman who cannot stop seeing the dead, and a man who is terrified of them, walking across a memorial to a widow who begged her husband to appear in her dreams. Whether the production intended the parallel is anyone’s guess.

The house that was moved upriver

The other Andong location is quieter and stranger. Nongam Historic House is the head house of a family that has held it for something like 650 years, built around the memory of Yi Hyeon-bo (1467–1555) — pen name Nongam, a scholar-official who quit court, came home, and wrote songs in plain Korean about fishing and old age rather than in the classical Chinese his rank called for.

The house did not start here. It stood at Buncheon village until the Andong Dam went in and the valley began filling with water. Rather than lose it, the family took the buildings apart and rebuilt them upriver at Gasong-ri in the 2000s. So the weathered pillars and the deep verandah you see behind Yang Se-jong in episode 9 are genuinely old, and are also not where they were born — a house that was carried out of a flood.

You can sleep there. The inner quarters, the men’s quarters and the detached pavilion all take guests, which is a rare thing for a filming location. It is a working household, though, not a hotel with a front desk — call 054-843-1202 before you plan around it.

Suggested route

Andong is an overnight, not a day trip, and the reason is the second location. KTX-Eum from Cheongnyangni to Andong Station takes about 2 hours — the fast, easy part. Wolyeonggyo is 10 minutes from the station by taxi, so the classic order is to arrive in the afternoon, settle in, then take the bridge at dusk when the lights and the fountain are both running. Hahoe Folk Village and the Byeongsan Confucian academy are the other two reasons people come to Andong, and both fit into that same first afternoon.

The Nongam Historic House sits an hour east along the river with no useful bus, which is exactly why booking a room there solves the transport problem instead of creating one. Day two: the house in the morning, back to Seoul by early evening.

The Singapore episodes

Episodes 9 and 10 send the couple abroad, and those scenes were shot for real in November 2025. In order of how much you’d actually detour for them: Lau Pa Sat, the Victorian cast-iron hawker centre from 1894 where they eat satay and fried carrot cake — the adjoining Boon Tat Street closes to traffic at night and becomes Satay Street; the Jubilee Bridge at Marina Bay for the night walk; Kampong Glam for souvenir shopping; Chapters by Drinks&Co at Clarke Quay for the business meeting; and the Singapore Oceanarium and The Laurus at Resorts World Sentosa, where the more consequential scene happens. Singaporean actor Charlie Goh appears in episode 9.

We’re a Korea site, so that’s as far as we’ll take it — but if you were going to Singapore anyway, all six are within a short ride of each other.

What we’re still checking

The closing credits name roughly thirty Korean sites, far more than any outlet has written up: two five-star Seoul hotels, Yeouido Hangang Park, several university campuses, a working temple in Pyeongtaek, hospital and motor-shop exteriors in Gyeonggi, the new-town streets of Naepo in South Chungcheong, and a run of Jeju coastal road and resort names. We’ve listed the ones that are both plausible and worth your time, and flagged which rest on the credit list alone.

The open question is Reina Hotel — nobody from the production has said which building plays it, and until someone does, the Walkerhill identification is an educated guess rather than an answer. If you recognise a frame we’ve missed, tell us.
